Joel tries his hand at ploughing-- "Horses are sometimes unpredictable . . . and smelly!"
Last week Jeff, Joel, Aaron and two journalism students from the University of Western Ontario ventured to Mervin Miller's organic farm outside Aylmer. We source much of our produce from Mervin and spend time on his farm each week picking up orders and CSA shares (and sometimes taking a break to enjoy some field fresh food), but this was a visit of a different nature . . .
The Miller farm is part of an Amish organic farming co-operative, HOPE Eco-Farms (HOPE stands for Healthy Organic Produce Enterprises). Farming is done by hand and with ploughs run on horse power (we're talking REAL horse power!). We've been wanting to experience this method of farming first hand for awhile now, so when Mervin told us several weeks ago that he had a 5 acre field in need of ploughing, we jumped at the chance to volunteer. Stay tuned for a radio interview conducted by the journalism students!
